It is a challenge to find care for your pets when you are away that gives you peace of mind without guilt or worry. There are key factors to consider.

Health Requirements

Vaccinations for contagious diseases, fecal tests to prevent parasites and flea prevention are essential. You should be asked for that information and have to keep it up to date.

Cleanliness

A clean facility without longstanding odors is less likely to spread disease and demonstrates more attention to detail. Ask to take a tour of the facility before you book.

Facility Design

Stress levels are limited with good facility design. Kennel or room size and layout, noise prevention, natural light, disease filtering HVAC, cleaning products and other odors, time outdoors, individual or group play can all greatly impact the stress levels. Pheromone diffusers can provide a calming influence. Ample space and comfortable options for sleeping should be available. Check for photos of the areas your pet will sleep if you don’t have time for a tour.

Communication

A business that communicates with you is key. Some will reach out about even minor concerns right away and others will not. Daily photos or report cards are great evidence of communication. Choose a place with the level of communication you expect.

Group or Individual Playtime

Some dogs thrive on group playtime and others are traumatized by it and need individual playtime or walks. Group play increases risk for injury and disease transmission and requires a skilled observer to manage properly without dog fights. Cats are territorial and this is not ideal for them. Check the options for activity.

Monitoring

Access to cameras in play areas as well as individual kennels or rooms may be available 24/7 or only during certain times. Daily report cards or photos can also provide updates. Tracking collars can provide information on activity, sleep and location. You can also check in to the team via text, email or phone.

Food and Medication

It is always best for pets to eat their own food and treats. A change of diet isn’t ideal for health and adds more stress. Most places have team members who can effectively manage medicating pets properly, but it is good to ask how they manage medications.

Emergencies

Ask about the plan if your pet has a medical need while you are away. Sometimes minor issues can wait until you return and more serious issues could require them to go to an ER for hospitalization.

Pricing

Consider all the add-ons you would choose for your pet and compare the final cost and the value to you. It will vary considerably. There may be an all inclusive option that provides everything they need for one price.
